Secure Dumpster Ordinance Update

The City of Sioux City Environmental Services Division has updated the existing ordinance "8.24.130 Litter-Covered Receptacles Required," approved by the City Council on Monday, April 13, 2026. This revision clarifies that all trash receptacles must remain covered and secured at all times.

Section 1: Subsection 8.24.130 of the Sioux City Municipal Code is amended to read: All persons, firms, or corporations who have occasion to deposit litter of any kind or description shall so deposit such litter upon their premises in covered, secured receptacles in such a manner that the litter cannot be blown or carried onto streets and alleys by the wind.

The full code can be found at sioux-city.org under the Government tab.

Sanitation hauling companies have been notified of this change and will begin adding mechanisms to dumpsters to ensure lids can be secured within the next six (6) months. All dumpster lids must remain closed at all times. Failure to do so may result in a citation and fine.
