Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, by American composer and playwright Dave Malloy, is a modern musical adaptation of a section from Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. It focuses on the romantic entanglements and personal struggles of its characters.
Directed by Matthew Reeder, associate professor of directing, the musical is set against an eclectic blend of electro-pop, rock, and Russian folk music, and offers a kinetic, experimental take on Tolstoy's classic themes of love and destiny.
"This production brings Tolstoy's timeless themes of love and fate to life through a fusion of electro-pop, rock, and Russian folk music, creating a daring, experimental atmosphere that transports audiences to the heart of 19th-century Russia," Prof. Reeder said. "With immersive staging and a fresh take on classic literature, this production promises an unforgettable experience that captures the personal quests of its richly drawn characters."
