Iowa DNR issues air quality advisory through Thursday

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued a Statewide Air Quality Alert through 6 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. The Air Quality Index (AQI) may reach the red or "unhealthy" category, meaning both sensitive groups and the general public may experience health effects.

What to expect: Thick smoke reached ground level early Tuesday, with areas in northwest Iowa already seeing unhealthy air quality levels. The heaviest smoke is expected in a band stretching from southwest to northeast Iowa, moving southward throughout the day and night.

Who is at higher risk: People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, teens, and outdoor workers may be more affected by the smoke. These groups are encouraged to limit or reschedule outdoor activity and take more breaks if outdoors.

Health recommendations:

  • Avoid long or intense outdoor activity.
  • Move activities indoors if possible.
  • Monitor symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort.
