NORTHBROOK, Ill. - Oct. 16, 2026 - UL Solutions (NYSE: ULS), a global leader in applied safety science, issued a public notice regarding fire sprinklers, which bear unauthorized UL Certification Marks for the United States and Canada and may pose safety risks.
The affected products have not been evaluated by UL Solutions against the appropriate safety standards, and it is unknown whether they meet any safety requirements. UL Solutions recommends that these fire sprinklers be immediately removed from service.
These fire sprinklers are marked with a TYCO (Johnson Controls) model designation, TY9226, but they were not produced by the authorized manufacturer and do not bear any brand name.
The affected fire sprinklers bear an unauthorized UL Certification Mark for the United States and Canada - cULus - and the following:
Differentiating authentic UL authorized Sprinklers from the unauthorized version.
1. Deflector
a. A visual examination of the deflector shows it does not meet drawing/design specifications.
i. Genuine Tyco sprinkler deflector does not contain blemishes, scratches or imperfections like the potential counterfeit sprinkler deflector.
ii. The color of the genuine Tyco sprinkler deflector has a darker shade than the potential counterfeit sprinkler.
iii. The etching of the genuine Tyco sprinkler differs in text size and style than the unauthorized sprinkler.
iv. The etching on the unauthorized sprinkler contains the markings of cULus, FM, VDS, LPCB and TYCO Sin #TY9226.
2. Button Sealing Assembly
a. A visual examination of the button assembly shows that it does not meet drawing specifications. The button sealing assembly consists of a 2-piece button and a Belleville washer with Teflon tape applied to both sides. The unauthorized button assembly contains a button, an O-ring and a spring which is partially staked to the button. The O-ring/gasket is used to seal the sprinkler.
The products were found to be offered and sold in São Paulo, Brazil.
"The presence of unauthorized UL Marks on these products is a serious concern," said Karine Johnfroe, vice president and general manager of the Built Environment group at UL Solutions. "We urge anyone who has purchased these fire sprinklers to remove them from service immediately."
UL Solutions supports manufacturers, regulatory authorities, building owners, consultants and insurance companies with certification and fire sprinkler testing services for a variety of suppression equipment, including products for residential and commercial sprinkler systems. The UL Mark, widely recognized and respected around the world, indicates that fire sprinklers have been certified by UL Solutions to the applicable safety standards.
