On Friday, June 12th, thirty-eight new police officers graduated from the Cambridge-Northeastern Police Academy during a ceremony held at the King Open School. The graduation ceremony included remarks from Cambridge Police Chaplin Bishop Brian Greene, Cambridge Police Acting Commissioner Pauline Wells, Northeastern University Police Lieutenant Jim Witzgall, Deputy Executive Director or the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Amy Fanikos and a keynote address given by retired Chief Charles Femino who spent time leading the Somerville Police Department and Endicott College Police Department.
These newly graduated officers will be joining their respective departments after having successfully completed a rigorous 23-week training program that commenced in January. Of the 38 graduates, eighteen have been sworn in as members of the Cambridge Police Department. These new officers will now take part in an orientation program, followed by a lengthy and in-depth Field Training program that will help them apply the skills they have learned
Now in its eighth year, the Cambridge-Northeastern Police Academy is authorized by the MPTC to provide recruit level training. Student officers complete courses in a variety of disciplines that will help them become proficient in the skills required to be a successful police officer. Courses are taught by instructors who have been trained and certified by the MPTC, many of whom are members of the Cambridge Police Department or other law enforcement agencies.
