It's time to stop viewing urban nature as a luxury and start treating it as vital public health infrastructure. Biodiversity-supporting actions, such as expanding large parks, adding native plants, connecting green corridors, and reducing pesticides, directly correlate with better physical and mental health, reduced pollution exposure, and stronger communities. Urban greening isn't just about aesthetics; it's investment in community resilience and well-being.
Myla Aronson, PhD Assistant Professor and Director of the Hutcheson Memorial Forest Center, Rutgers University, and Senior Ecologist, Second Nature Ecology + Design
We should all have access to nature-to its health benefits and the peace it brings us. Only some places explicitly protect that access through law, but it is a fundamental human right that should never depend on where we live, what we earn, or who we are.
Emily Bergeron, PhD Associate Professor of Historic Preservation and Associate Dean for Administration, University of Kentucky
When we tend our landscapes, they tend to us. Biodiversity deepens that relationship, bringing cleaner water, cooler streets, and healthier communities. Equity asks who gets to be part of it, and landscape architects have the tools to make sure the answer is everyone.
María Landoni, ASLA, PLA Founder and Design Director, Sur Landscape Architecture
