PPB Reminds Drivers to Slow Down and Watch for Students as New School Year Begins

Many Portland-area students will begin classes on Wednesday, August 26. Others will start in the days and weeks to follow. During the opening weeks of the school year, PPB officers will maintain a visible presence in and around school zones across the city. Officers will engage in education and outreach, reminding drivers to follow posted speed limits and remain alert for children walking, biking, or traveling by school bus.

"Every child should be able to get to school and back home safely," PPB Chief Bob Day said. "As students return to our streets and sidewalks, we need drivers to slow down, put the phone away, and give children the time and space they need to travel safely. Careful driving around schools is something every one of us can contribute to."

Key safety reminders for drivers:

• School zones are in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days, unless otherwise posted.
• The speed limit in school zones is 20 mph.
• Be alert for children crossing streets, particularly near intersections, driveways, and school entrances.
• Watch for crossing guards and school buses, and follow their directions.
• Eliminate distractions by putting away phones and avoiding handheld device use while driving.
• Slow down and be prepared for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway.

As students head back to classrooms, PPB encourages everyone traveling through school areas to make safety a priority. By slowing down, staying alert, and looking out for one another, drivers can help ensure students have a safe start to the new school year.
