Held in a hybrid format at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) , the event marked an important milestone for IOCINDIO following its formal establishment as an IOC Sub-Commission. Discussions highlighted strong regional commitment to coordinated ocean research, data sharing, and science-based policymaking across the Central Indian Ocean.
Advancing coordinated ocean science
Participants underscored the critical role of regional ocean science in improving understanding of monsoon dynamics, marine ecosystems, and biogeochemical processes that underpin livelihoods and climate resilience across the region. The session emphasized the value of sustained and collaborative ocean observing systems, as well as flagship scientific programmes such as the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2) , whose activities have now been extended through 2030.
Member States expressed strong interest in launching coordinated, multi-country research cruises that would pool national research vessels, observing platforms, and scientific expertise. Indonesia, Iran, and Kuwait, among others, indicated readiness to contribute. Discussions highlighted the need for harmonized methodologies, shared timelines, and open data frameworks to ensure that regional efforts deliver maximum scientific and societal benefits. Regional institutions, including INCOIS, offered access to existing data platforms and technical services to support these initiatives.
