What if zombies were fought with the strength and skill of Thai martial arts instead of weapons? This exhilarating bare-handed combat is what awaits audiences in Ziam , Netflix Thailand's first action-zombie film, premiering on July 9. The newly released trailer offers a glimpse into this zombie-riddled world, where survival demands immense courage and non-stop fights.
Starring the talented Mark-Prin Suparat, Ziam follows the story of Singh, a former professional Muay-Thai fighter, who dreams of retiring to a peaceful life with his girlfriend, Rin (Nychaa-Nuttanicha Dungwattanawanich), a doctor. Their plans are upended when a zombie outbreak engulfs the hospital where Rin works. Armed with his powerful fists and kicks, Singh embarks on a perilous mission to save Rin and a young boy named Buddy (Vayla-Wanvayla Boonnithipaisit) from the undead onslaught.
Alongside the thrills, Ziam is also poised to showcase Mark's dedication and hard work in practicing Thai martial arts. The film zooms in on Singh's bare-handed battle against the zombie horde, highlighting the gritty realism and heart-stopping tension that will keep viewers glued to the screen. Reflecting on his preparation for the role, Mark shares, "I had to get in top physical shape. I joined a Muay-Thai workshop and spent around four to five hours a day there. Training started with warm-ups, jumping rope, shadow boxing, practicing techniques with my coach, learning counterattacks, and rehearsing the fight choreography for the movie."
Blending Thailand's unique flair with the global appeal of zombie thrillers, Ziam distinguishes itself with its straightforward action and horror elements, offering pure zombie thrills with a distinctive twist. "We've all seen many zombie movies, but we rarely see zombies involved in hand-to-hand combat or boxing. We wanted to explore what it's like to fight zombies using the techniques of Muay Thai, which is known for its intensity and the use of the entire body, including elbows and knees as powerful weapons," Director Kulp Kaljareuk explains. "Each zombie is crafted with special makeup. No CGI was used to create raw and gory flesh. This choice helps give the zombies a visceral, physical presence that draws the audience deeper into the world."
The film's title also carries dual significance, blending "Siam," Thailand's former name, with the letter "Z" for "zombie," symbolizing the invasion. In collaboration with Kantana Motion Pictures and from the creative team behind Master of the House , Ziam promises an edge-of-your-seat experience for action and horror fans alike.
As the stakes rise and the undead close in, will Singh's fighting spirit and martial arts prowess be enough to save Rin and Buddy? Brace yourself for the zombie epidemic as Ziam premieres on July 9, only on Netflix.
