Indonesia: 8th security dialogue with the European Union takes place in Semarang

On 18 September, the European Union and Indonesia held their eighth security dialogue in Semarang, Indonesia.

They exchanged views and respective assessments on international and regional security situation in Europe, in particular Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, as well as developments in South-East Asia and in the Middle East.

They also discussed ongoing bilateral cooperation and agreed to deepen engagement on security and defence in a vast array of areas, such as counter-terrorism, preventing and countering violent extremism, maritime security, peacekeeping and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operation, cyber issues, transnational organised crime, disaster management, CBRN issues, as well as non-proliferation / disarmament and arms control.

As part of their visit, the EU side visited the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement (JCLEC), where it had exchanges with experts from the Centre.

The Dialogue was co-chaired by Alison Weston, Acting Director for Security and Defence Policy of the European External Action Service, and by Nidya Kartikasari, Director for American and European Intra and Inter-regional Cooperation, Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The EU and Indonesia agreed to hold the next dialogue on security and defence matters in 2025 in Brussels.
