A longstanding tradition in Jesuit education, the Mass of the Holy Spirit dates back to the 16th century. Jesuit schools around the world continue this custom as a way to mark the start of the academic year. At Scranton, the Mass underscores the University's Jesuit mission by reminding the community that education is not only an intellectual pursuit but also a spiritual journey. It calls upon the Holy Spirit to guide and inspire students, faculty, and staff in their shared work of teaching, learning and service.

Following the Mass, a picnic lunch will be offered on the Dionne Green and the DeNaples Center Patio for all members of the University community.
