WHEREAS, since the first Jewish immigrants arrived in the United States in the 16th century, Jewish people have been instrumental in the prosperity of our state and nation; and,
WHEREAS, Jewish American Heritage Month was first recognized nationally by President George W. Bush in 2006, and has been reaffirmed in the following years; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan has a vibrant Jewish population who make significant contributions to government, countless industries, and the arts; and,
WHEREAS, throughout their rich history, Jewish Americans have worked to improve the conditions of marginalized groups across the nation, including during the Civil Rights Movement; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, I encourage all Michiganders to seek out ways to engage with Jewish history, including museum exhibits, literary works, and more; and,
WHEREAS, the principles of diversity and inclusion make our state stronger; and,
WHEREAS, discrimination of any kind, including antisemitism, is unacceptable in Michigan and the United States; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, let us celebrate the many contributions Jewish people continue to make in Michigan and throughout the United States;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, and Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2025 as Jewish American Heritage Month in Michigan.
