"From large global branding projects to local/community-based promotions, or an occasional one-off individual project or application of design, this year's jury reviewed an extremely wide range of work that in many ways exemplifies the rapidly shifting nature of designers and design today," said Dan Vlahos, 365: AIGA Year in Design Chair and AIGA Boston Board Member. "Regardless of budget or scale, the jury sought to recognize work that, like a time capsule of design, might somehow record and reward work that defines our time. Beyond this, we also sought to reward work that might serve to signal the future."
This year's jury was thoughtfully composed of a diverse range of perspectives and experiences that were brought to the evaluation process. Over the course of four months, there were three rigorous rounds of individual evaluation followed by a final group discussion. This collaborative process allowed the jury to consider the breadth of work submitted and select winning entries that truly reflect the spirit, innovation, and impact of contemporary design.
AIGA thanks this year's panel of esteemed jurors: Dan Vlahos (chair), Senior Lecturer, Bentley University; Jaakko Tammela, CPO/CDO, Stocci; Jeff LoPilato, Founder & Lead Designer, Planet People Studio; Kaleena Sales, Department Chair & Associate Professor, Tennessee State University; and Morgan Light, Design Director, COLLINS.
"In the jury's deliberations, we considered context, craft, typography, art direction, impact, originality, and more. In general, the jury was highly impressed with the overall quality of the submissions, which made some decisions extremely difficult. It is clear that contemporary design is everywhere and touches nearly everything. Design is being leveraged to inform, educate, celebrate, orient, generate interest, create value, and more-and in some cases, design is being leveraged to solve or address critical and complex problems," Vlahos said. "For those reasons and more, we are grateful to all who submitted to this year's 365: AIGA Year in Design competition. I am also thankful for the many hours that this year's jury-Kaleena, Jeff, Morgan, and Jaakko-spent ranking, reviewing, discussing, and thoughtfully deliberating this year's entries. At a glance, one thing remains abundantly clear: the future of design is curious, evolving, and bright!"
Giulia Donatello, AIGA's Design Competitions and Event Manager, played a pivotal leadership role in the success of this year's competition.
