The City of El Campo has formally expressed its support for the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act (S.315 and H.R.979), bipartisan federal legislation aimed at ensuring AM radio remains available in all new passenger vehicles sold in the United States.
In a resolution adopted on July 13, 2026, the City Council highlighted the essential role AM radio continues to play in public safety, emergency communications, and community information, especially in rural regions of Texas.
"AM radio has been a lifeline for our residents during hurricanes, floods, severe weather, and power outages," the resolution states. "It remains one of the most reliable and resilient ways to deliver critical information when other communication systems fail."
The resolution specifically recognizes KULP Radio, El Campo's long serving local station, for its decades long commitment to providing local news, weather updates, agricultural reports, community event coverage, and emergency alerts to residents of El Campo, Wharton County, and surrounding communities.
City leaders emphasized that preserving AM radio access in vehicles is vital for rural Texans who often face limited or disrupted cellular and internet connectivity while traveling.
The resolution urges Congress to continue supporting policies that protect public access to dependable emergency communications and locally focused broadcasting. Copies of the resolution will be transmitted to Texas members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
