Community Celebrates Age & Disability Friendly Act

More than 300 community members gathered to celebrate the launch of Sacramento County's Local Age & Disability-Friendly Action Plan (LADAP). During the launch event on Monday, March 17, dozens of local organizations that serve older adults and people with disabilities came together at the Sacramento State University Ballroom. Attendees received information and resources and enjoyed live music and dance by the ACC Pocket Pickers and Gracious Ladies Me Ke Aloha.

While the LADAP advocates for change and action, it also celebrates the contributions everyone can bring to the community. During the launch event, speakers from Sacramento County, the California Department of Aging and Sacramento State University talked about the importance of making our county more livable, accessible and connected for everyone, regardless of age, ability or income.

"The vision of an age & disability-friendly Sacramento County is not just a dream; it's a destination we reach together. This is more than a journey; it's a transformation of Sacramento County into a place where everyone can thrive. The LADAP Launch event ignited a spark of hope, fueled by the power of collaboration and demonstrating the power we have when we work together," said Sacramento County Department of Child, Family and Adult Services Human Program Planner Contessa Bunn.

By 2030, one in four Sacramento County residents will be 60 or older. Additionally, approximately 200,000 residents currently live with disabilities, making this plan a crucial effort to ensure a more inclusive future for all. By creating a Local Age and Disability-Friendly Action Plan, Sacramento County is ensuring residents with varying needs are listened to and connected with resources. This initiative is part of a broader statewide effort supported by the California Department of Aging and the AARP's Age-Friendly Network of States and Communities. This plan aligns with the five bold goals of California's Master Plan for Aging:
  1. Housing for All Stages & Ages - Ensuring accessible and affordable housing options for residents of all ages.
  2. Health Reimagined - Expanding healthcare access and wellness programs tailored to older and disabled adults.
  3. Inclusion & Equity, Not Isolation - Fostering community connections and reducing social isolation.
  4. Caregiving That Works - Strengthening support for caregivers and long-term care services.
  5. Affording Aging - Addressing economic challenges that impact aging residents.
