Hear the Beep, Save Your Life: Test Your Smoke Alarms on September 28

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife - September 25, 2025

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) are calling on all residents to take part in Test Your Smoke Alarm Day on Sunday, September 28, 2025. You can participate by testing smoke alarms in your home to make sure they are in good working condition.

The theme for Test Your Smoke Alarm Day, observed every year, is "Saved by the Beep."

Smoke alarms save lives. Every home in the Northwest Territories (NWT) should have working smoke alarms installed. On September 28, take a few seconds to press the test button, ensure alarms are not expired, and review your home fire escape plan.

To keep your home and family safe, remember the following:

  • Smoke alarms are required on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.
    • For added protection, install smoke alarms in each sleeping room as required in the 2020 National Building Code.
  • Smoke alarms should be tested monthly with batteries changed at least once a year.
  • Smoke alarms with non-replaceable (long-life) batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years.
  • All smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years of service.
  • Renters must notify their landlord as soon as they become aware that a smoke alarm is either missing, disconnected, or not operating.

Take action: On Sunday, September 28, press the test button and make sure you hear the beep.
