The Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, launched Karta Festa 2026 programme, an initiative by the Esplora Interactive Science Centre, during a press event held at an active Carnival workshop in Marsa. The setting reflected the creativity, craftsmanship and community spirit shared by the Carnival tradition and scientific exploration.
In his address, Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti highlighted how Karta Festa brings together science, sustainability and Malta's cultural heritage through practical and accessible experiences for the general public. He stated that, "Karta Festa reflects the Government's ongoing commitment to investing in scientific education, creativity and innovation as key pillars for the future of our country. By integrating scientific thinking into our cultural traditions, we are ensuring that young people and families can engage with science in ways that are inclusive and directly connected to Malta's identity and values."
Inspired by the art and techniques of Carnival floats, Karta Festa 2026 offers a dynamic programme featuring live science shows, creative workshops and interactive drop-in activities for all ages. Highlights include a live science show exploring water conservation and the water cycle; hands-on workshops focused on recycling, textiles and sustainable materials; storytelling sessions for younger children introducing environmental and marine themes; as well as creative Science on the Spot activities where visitors contribute to the design, construction and restoration of Carnival-inspired elements.
Esplora's Deputy Director, Kiki Mizzi, emphasised the programme's artistic core, stating that "Carnival is a celebration of imagination, colour and craftsmanship. Through Karta Festa, we are placing art at the heart of learning and encouraging participants to explore design, form and creativity while discovering how artistic processes intersect with science."
Karta Festa 2026 will take place at the Esplora Interactive Science Centre between 14 and 17 February 2026, during the Carnival period. The programme will offer families a unique opportunity to experience science through one of Malta's most vibrant cultural traditions. Further details about the programme and booking information will be announced closer to the event.
