WASHINGTON - Tonight, Senate Democrats put Senate Republicans on the record about how their budget puts billionaires first and families last. Democrats organized amendments in six categories to show how Republicans are:
-
Increasing costs, including with Trump's tariff taxes
-
Giving tax breaks to the wealthy
-
Taking away health care by attacking Medicaid and Medicare
-
Gutting Social Security
-
Harming veterans and our national security
-
Enabling corruption and self-dealing
A full list of Democratic amendments is below.
Increasing Costs, Including With Trump's Tariff Taxes
President Trump and Congressional Republicans are increasing prices with the Trump tariff tax, which will cost the average family nearly $4,000 per year. The Republican Budget would make groceries even more expensive by threatening food assistance for more than 40 million Americans, including 16 million children and 5 million seniors.
Senate Republicans voted against:
-
Schumer Amendment No. 1884: To rescind President Trump's tariff taxes if the price of groceries, medicine, and other household goods increases.
-
Luján Amendment No. 1726: To protect food assistance and other agriculture programs.
-
Welch Amendment No. 1661: To prevent essential services for children, families, and seniors - including Meals on Wheels, Head Start, and child care - from being defunded to give massive tax cuts to billionaires.
-
Sanders Amendment No. 2126: To help families make ends meet with higher prices by allowing the Senate to increase the Federal minimum wage to $17 an hour by a simple majority vote.
Giving Tax Breaks to the Wealthy
More than two-thirds of the benefits of the Republican tax plan go to the wealthy and big corporations. That amounts to $25 trillion in tax cuts over the next 30 years, and $50 million to Elon Musk in the next 10 years.
Senate Republicans voted against:
-
Kelly Amendment No. 1737: To prevent tax cuts for people making over $100 million a year.
-
Murphy Amendment No. 1977: To prevent tax cuts for people making over $500 million a year.
-
King Amendment No. 1773: To prevent tax cuts for people making over $1 billion a year.
-
Warren Amendment No. 1647: To prevent tax cuts for corporations making over $1 billion a year.
-
Rosen Amendment No. 2152: To provide tax cuts for the middle class and small businesses while ensuring large corporations and the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share.
-
Merkley Amendment No. 1758: To prevent more than $37 trillion from being added to the debt in 30 years-more debt than has accumulated over the past 249 years.
-
Hickenlooper Amendment No. 2107: To prevent selling off our public lands to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy.
Taking Away Health Care by Attacking Medicaid and Medicare
Republicans voted to take away Americans' health care by raiding Medicaid, which provides health care to 2 in 3 nursing home residents, 2 in 5 children, and 1 in 3 rural Americans. Republicans have also laid the groundwork to raise prescription drug prices by undermining Medicare drug price negotiations, and are failing to prevent health insurance premiums from rising at the end of this year. Elon Musk recently called Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security "the big one to eliminate."
Senate Republicans voted against:
-
Wyden Amendment No. 1989: To stop cuts to Medicaid.
-
Baldwin Amendment No. 1693: To prevent cuts to Medicaid that could lead to rural hospital closures, increased costs for people with private insurance, and higher rates of uncompensated care
-
Reed Amendment No. 1645: To prevent Americans from losing health care through Medicaid, including seniors, children, families, individuals with disabilities, veterans, and military families.
-
Warnock Amendment No. 2177: To preserve access to health care by preventing cuts to Medicaid that could lead to loss of benefits or coverage, and slashed provider payments.
-
Kim Amendment No 1644: To prevent cuts to Medicaid and Medicare, which would increase barriers to American caregivers.
-
Cortez Masto Amendment No. 1690: To prevent increased prescription drug costs for seniors and people with disabilities with Medicare.
-
Shaheen Amendment No. 1602: To extend the Affordable Care Act premium tax credits and prevent millions of Americans from losing health insurance.
Gutting Social Security
The Trump Administration and Elon Musk are attacking Americans' hard-earned Social Security benefits, making it harder for seniors to get their benefits by cutting phone service and closing 47 field offices. Elon Musk called Social Security a "Ponzi scheme," Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said seniors won't complain if they miss a check, and President Trump himself spent three minutes attacking Social Security during his State of the Union Address.
Senate Republicans voted against:
-
Ossoff Amendment No. 2186: To reverse cuts to the Social Security Administration, including cuts by Elon Musk's DOGE.
-
Hirono Amendment No. 2180: To prevent Elon Musk's DOGE from closing Social Security field and regional offices, preserving access to benefits for seniors and people with disabilities.
-
Markey Amendment No. 1529: To protect Social Security benefits by preventing Elon Musk's DOGE from limiting access to Social Security phone services.
Harming Veterans and Our National Security
Republicans refused to stand up to the Trump Administration's threats to our national security, from sharing classified material on Signal to undercutting our Ukrainian allies. Republicans did nothing to stop the Administration and Elon Musk from undermining the benefits our veterans deserve with attacks on the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Senate Republicans voted against:
-
Warner Amendment No. 1310: To protect service members by prohibiting the use of Signal and other commercial messaging applications for sharing information on the timing, sequencing, or weapons to be used related to impending U.S. military operations.
-
Bennet Amendment No. 1646: To prohibit any reduction in U.S. security assistance and intelligence-sharing with Ukraine.
-
Padilla Amendment No. 1774: To support the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and its continued role in providing nonpartisan and long-term disaster relief to disaster survivors.
Enabling Corruption and Self-Dealing
The Trump Administration has illegally fired independent inspectors general, attacked consumer protections, and ignored laws, all in order to maximize their payout to the wealthy and biggest corporations.
Senate Republicans voted against:
-
Booker Amendment No. 1441: To ensure contracts made with farmers are honored.
-
Alsobrooks Amendment No. 1466: To protect legally binding collective bargaining agreements and the right to organize for Federal workers.
