WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Brad Finstad (MN-01) and Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-02) led 14 Members of Congress in sending a letter to President Donald Trump and his administration urging immediate action to strengthen domestic production of vitamins and other critical nutrients and review vulnerabilities in the current supply chain. Cosigners of the letter include Reps. Don Bacon (NE-02), Mike Bost (IL-12), Julie Fedorchak (ND-AL), Michelle Fischbach (MN-07), Dusty Johnson (SD-AL), John Joyce (PA-13), Darin LaHood (IL-16), Tracey Mann (KS-01), Mark Messmer (IN-08), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), David Rouzer (NC-07), Derek Schmidt (KS-02), Austin Scott (GA-08), and Pete Stauber (MN-08).
China currently leads the global vitamin market, accounting for the vast majority of U.S. vitamin imports. In the letter, the Representatives articulate the vulnerabilities posed by U.S. over-reliance on China for vitamin manufacturing and highlight the need to reduce this dependence to protect families and farmers from avoidable shortages, keep grocery prices stable, and guarantee parents can access safe and consistent nutrition for their children.
"China's monopoly on vitamin production puts our food security and national security at enormous risk," said Rep. Finstad. "As long as we rely on an adversary like China to produce nearly all of our global vitamins, our U.S. food security, livestock health, infant nutrition, and public wellbeing remain vulnerable. My colleagues and I are strongly urging President Trump and his administration to take necessary steps to strengthen domestic vitamin manufacturing to protect the American people."
"China has strategically captured significant market share for everyday essentials, including vitamins and minerals used in baby formula and agriculture production. Securing our supply chain is a food security and national security priority. Shoring up the agriculture input supply chain is vital to protecting our families, our economy, and our future, and I look forward to building on the Trump Administration's work on this vital issue," said Rep. Hinson.
The letter calls on the Trump Administration to take four immediate actions:
