Join lead artists Eddy Jimenez and Irene Ramirez for an engaging introduction to Zapotec rug weaving, natural dye techniques, and the cultural symbolism embedded in traditional designs. Through textiles on display, educational materials, and live demonstrations, attendees will gain insight into how these practices reflect generations of knowledge and craftsmanship. They will also learn how these traditions are directly informing the City's upcoming Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative, inspiring a public art installation in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara.

The motifs and cultural traditions shared by the artists will help shape this new installation, celebrating local Mixteco heritage and strengthening the community's connection to the cultural roots behind the project. The City of Santa Barbara, in collaboration with the County Office of Arts & Culture, has been awarded $100,000 from Bloomberg Philanthropies to create the asphalt art installation. The project aims to revitalize the State and Carrillo intersection, enhance pedestrian safety, and establish a dynamic new home for the Farmer's Market.
Community members are also encouraged to attend the next workshop, where the artists will continue sharing their creative process:
