International Forest Product Associations Call for Targeted EUDR Simplifications Ahead of European Commission Review

WASHINGTON, D.C. -The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), alongside forest product associations from Canada, Australia, Japan and New Zealand, submitted a joint statement to the European Commission highlighting unresolved issues in the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) ahead of its upcoming review.

The associations warned that recent EUDR amendments benefit only EU based operators, placing unnecessary burdens on low risk, non EU supply chains. They urged the Commission to adopt targeted, risk based traceability requirements aligned with sustainable forest management.

The joint statement outlines two recommendations:

  • Proportionate, risk based traceability for forest products from low risk countries
  • Exemptions for forest residuals and by products that do not drive deforestation
