Sutter Health received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for its new Transitional Year residency program at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, offering resident physicians exposure to diverse patients and practice environments within Sutter's community-based divisions.

Paving the way for future healthcare leaders

The structure of the Transitional Year program at Alta Bates Summit will mirror the Transitional Year residency program at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. The successful training format cycles learners through key fields of medicine such as Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Surgery and various subspecialties, tailoring the curricula to specific medical interests so residents are best positioned to learn, thrive and lead in service to patients and communities.

Dr. Rishi Menon

"Our focus is on providing a one-year experience to maximize learner's career growth, help identify development patterns and provide guidance to help Sutter residents maximize their potential," says Dr. Rishi Menon, program director of Sutter Roseville's Transitional Year residency program. "Our goal is to provide them medical knowledge and the tools they need to continue their success in the future."

The first class of the Alta Bates Summit Transitional Year program begins in June 2025. Residents will rotate through general and specialized medical experiences, engaging in comprehensive training to meet unique patient needs with a well-rounded approach to caring for patients in communities big and small.

Elevating standards of care through mentorship

Along with interactive coaching, Transitional Year residency programs encourage fresh perspectives and collaboration across the Sutter system. Through medical apprenticeship, continual learning and shared best practices, this accreditation further solidifies Sutter's commitment to achieving a new level of clinical excellence.

Dr. Dineen Greer

"Sutter seeks to advance healthcare standards and strengthen patient trust in the communities it serves," says Dr. Dineen Greer, vice president and designated institutional official of Sutter's Graduate Medical Education. "The Transitional Year program supports these goals, fostering innovation within the system walls and attracting best-in-class talent."

Recruitment for the Alta Bates Summit Transitional Year program will accept 15 residents annually.
