Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick Confirms Major Win for Federal Workers: Utility Suspends Shutoffs Amid Government Shutdown

TAMARAC, FL ─ Today, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) received a letter confirming commitment from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to ensure that all federal workers receive a payment extension for the duration of the government shutdown. Last week, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick wrote to FPL CEO Armando Pimentel, urging him to suspend utility shutoffs for federal workers.

"Federal workers are a critical component of communities across Florida, and it is imperative that these individuals and their families are taken care of during these difficult times," wrote Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) to FPL CEO Armando Pimentel. "Given your company's dedication to the people of Florida, I am respectfully requesting that your company suspend the collection of payments for utilities for Florida's federal workers for the duration of the government shutdown."

In response, FPL acknowledged it has already begun granting payment extensions to federal workers and connecting them with additional assistance services. "Rest assured, we are going to give federal employees time to pay their bills," wrote Mr. Pimentel. "At FPL, our priority is to keep the lights on for every customer, especially during such times."

Any federal employee impacted by the shutdown should contact FPL for assistance and can visit https://www.FPL.comfor more information
