Congressman Johnson Announces $2.8 Million Grant for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Expansion in DeKalb County

DECATUR, GA - Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) announced today that DeKalb County has been awarded $2.8 million through the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program. The funding, established under President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will significantly expand the county's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, making sustainable transportation options more accessible for all residents.

Congressman Johnson, a vocal advocate for equitable transportation infrastructure and the clean-energy economy, provided a letter of support to bolster DeKalb County's grant application.

"This investment in DeKalb County's electric vehicle infrastructure is a game-changer for our community," said Congressman Johnson. "Not only will it help combat climate change and improve air quality, but it also ensures that all residents - including those in underserved areas - benefit from the transition to a clean-energy future. I'm proud to have supported this effort to secure critical resources for our district."

The $2.8 million grant will fund the installation of 259 EV charging ports at 48 strategically selected sites across the county, including public libraries, parks, senior centers, public safety facilities, and communities historically underserved or disadvantages. The initiative will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and advance economic and transportation equity in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.

The project, titled Driving Change: Equitable and Sustainable EV Infrastructure Deployment in DeKalb County, Georgia, underscores DeKalb County's commitment to reducing energy burdens on its residents and promoting economic opportunities.

"This federal grant reflects the strong partnership between DeKalb County, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and our shared vision for a sustainable future," added Congressman Johnson.

The grant is part of the Federal Highway Administration's efforts to support zero- and low-emission transportation infrastructure nationwide. The Charging and Fueling Infrastructure program helps communities like DeKalb County prepare for the increasing demand for electric vehicles, creating a more accessible and inclusive EV network.
