Simple steps to stay safe this winter

CHARLESTON, W.Va., January 3, 2026 - Winter in Appalachia is full of seasonal fun. From snow days spent sledding and ice skating, to cozy nights gathered with family and friends. However, cold, wintry weather also presents some serious risks. Learn more about how to protect yourself and your loved ones as the temperatures drop with these safety tips.

1. Protect your pipes. Outside pipes can freeze and burst unexpectedly during cold weather. Make sure that doesn't happen by letting your water drip at night to prevent freezing.
2. Stay warm safely. If you're using a wood or coal burning fireplace, keep a fire extinguisher nearby and make sure your family knows how to use it. If you're using a space heater, place it on a hard, level surface, away from curtains, bedding or anything else flammable - and don't plug it into a power strip.
3. Stock up before severe weather strikes. In addition to putting together an emergency preparedness kit, you should also make sure your home is generally well stocked with necessities to keep yourself and your family safe, such as food, water and medicine. This way, if the weather gets bad, you don't have to worry about travelling for supplies.
4. Weatherize your home. Check your home's insulation to make sure it's in good condition or install new insulation. Use thermal curtains to block cold air and add weather stripping to gaps around doors and windows where heat may escape. Finally, make sure to check your heating system and ensure everything is working.
5. Travel safely. Avoid driving in wintry weather until road conditions are favorable. Vehicle accidents are often a cause of power outages, especially when snowy and icy road conditions are present.
