LAFD Firefighters Kick Off the School Year with Visits Across Los Angeles

On the first day back to school, Los Angeles firefighters traded the engine bay for the schoolyard, visiting campuses across the city to welcome students back and remind them their local fire station is more than just a place to call in an emergency.

Crews from stations throughout Los Angeles stopped by elementary and middle schools this morning, greeting students at drop off, posing for photos, and handing out a few words of encouragement before the first bell. For many kids, it was their first face-to-face introduction to the men and women who protect their neighborhoods.

"We wanted them to see us on a good day," said an LAFD member, "Kids should know firefighters as neighbors and mentors first, not just the people who show up when something goes wrong. Starting the year this way builds that connection early."

The visits are part of a broader effort by the department to strengthen ties with the communities it serves, one relationship at a time. Members spent time answering questions, letting students take a closer look at the apparatus, and sharing simple safety reminders for the year ahead, from fire drills at home to knowing how to reach 911.

For the firefighters involved, the morning carried its own meaning, a reminder of why many took the job in the first place, and a chance to show up for the city in a way that has nothing to do with an emergency call.

"It's a good day when the biggest thing on the schedule is high fives and welcoming kids back to school," Chief Moore added. "We'll take more days like this."
