Irrigation Tips for Warm Weather

Every July, we celebrate Smart Irrigation Month by sharing tips to help customers make the most of every drop outdoors. As temperatures rise, it's easy to overwater your lawn or garden in an effort to keep the landscape healthy. With some simple adjustments, you can keep your landscape looking healthy throughout the summer while reducing water waste.

  1. Water Early or Late: Avoid the heat of the day - water before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m. to reduce evaporation and allow plants to soak it in.
  2. Get to Know Your Irrigation Controller: Learn to program your irrigation controller to keep your plants healthy without wasting water. Watch our irrigation controller video to learn how.
  3. Spruce Up Your Sprinklers: Regularly inspect hoses, sprinklers, and drip systems. Even a small leak can waste a lot of water.
  4. Consider Drip Irrigation: Drip systems deliver water directly to roots, making them more efficient than overhead sprinklers. Get more information about irrigation systems.
  5. Upgrade to Smart Irrigation Controllers: These devices use local weather to automatically adjust watering schedules, ensuring your landscape receives the right amount of water at the right time. Learn more about CCWD's Smart Irrigation Controller Rebate.
  6. Mulch It Up: Add mulch to your landscape to lock in moisture and reduce the need for frequent watering. Get mulch coupons.
  7. Let Your Lawn Rest: Water deeply and infrequently and you will create a stronger, healthier lawn. In our climate lawns only require water 3-4 days per week in the middle of summer. Get detailed lawn care advice.

A few smart changes can make a big difference in your outdoor water use - and your water bill. Have a question or aren't sure where to start? We're here to help! Email our Water Efficiency team or call 925-688-8320.
