Walberg Votes to Prevent Another Democrat Shutdown

Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) voted in favor of, and the House passed H.R. 9770, the Continuing Appropriations Act of 2027, by a vote of 220-205. The legislation would continue federal funding through December 4, 2026, while Congress completes work on the full-year fiscal year 2027 appropriations bills.

"Last year, congressional Democrats triggered the longest full government shutdown in American history, disrupting air travel, critical services, and nutrition assistance," said Rep. Walberg. "Their obstruction left servicemembers, air traffic controllers, TSA personnel, federal law enforcement officers, and other federal employees unsure of when they would receive their next paycheck and Michigan families wondering how they would put food on the table. This clean continuing resolution ensures that another costly government shutdown does not befall the American people while Congress continues to complete the appropriations process in regular order."

Background

A 43-day government shutdown began on October 1, 2025, following a lapse in federal appropriations. While House Republicans voted on September 19, 2025, for a bipartisan government funding deal, Democrats in the Senate voted 15 times against it to keep the government closed, forcing the longest full government shutdown in U.S. history that cost taxpayers $15 billion per week.

Beginning on February 14, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security also experienced a historic 75-day funding lapse, jeopardizing our homeland security and placing undue financial insecurity on employees of one of our nation's largest federal agencies.
