Deputy Minister of Defence calls for a disciplinedapproach to national development

  • Emphasizes the importance of maintaining the rule of law

The Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) visited the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) in Ratmalana, yesterday (Jan 09). On his arrival at the university, the Deputy Minister was warmly welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of KDU, Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara.

After paying floral tributes at the War Heroes' monument, he was accompanied by the VC to the conference hall for a discussion. The discussion encompassed a comprehensive overview of the function, achievements, and progress of ongoing projects of the university.

Following the briefing, the Deputy Minister addressed a diverse gathering comprising academic and non-academic staff, military officers, other ranks, and students. He said that the present government has taken education as one of its top priorities and will make every effort to stop the 'brain drain' the country is facing now by creating a conducive environment full of opportunities for everyone.

He emphasized the importance of imparting valuable knowledge and skill-based education to the younger generation while maintaining discipline and good conduct. He mentioned that a disciplined approach in every sphere of life including governance will enable the rule of law to prevail. He called for the upholding of the rule of law within the society where everyone will be responsible and accountable. This approach is important for us to come out of this economic and social quagmire, he said.

He also requested the young undergraduates to get the best education the KDU has to offer and contribute to the development of the country.

In conclusion to his official visit, the Deputy Minister inscribed remarks in the Visitor's Book to commemorate his visit to KDU.
