BURNSVILLE, N.C.
North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Division (ALE) Special Agents, in joint operation with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), have concluded a multi-month financial crime investigation involving the Burnsville ABC Store located at 752 W US Hwy 19 E, Burnsville, NC 28714.
The investigation began following information received regarding potential embezzlement by the store's manager, Linda McDowell. In May, ALE requested that the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Commission conduct a formal audit of the store.
Subsequent internal auditing confirmed a significant amount of missing funds. ALE and SBI agents, in coordination with the Yancey County District Attorney's Office, executed multiple search warrants targeting bank accounts, cellular devices, and computer hardware during the probe.
Investigators determined that McDowell embezzled $201,523.47 from the store.
"Embezzlement of public funds undermines the integrity of public institutions and erodes the trust communities place in those responsible for serving them," said ALE Director Bryan House. "Investigations like this are critical to ensuring accountability and protecting the resources entrusted to public agencies. We are grateful for our partnership with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and commend all the agents involved for their dedication, professionalism, and thorough investigative work."
Agents charged and arrested Linda Sue McDowell, 61, of Burnsville on the following charges.
McDowell was arrested without incident at her residence. She was issued a $1,000,000 secured bond.
