Northbound South Academy Boulevard to close Oct. 30-Nov. 2 for utility work

Northbound South Academy Boulevard between Hancock Expressway and Drennan Road will close from 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, through noon Monday, Nov. 2, as crews install new water and drainage pipes and repave the road. More closures are planned in November as work continues on the South Academy Boulevard Improvements Project.

Upcoming closures include:

Northbound South Academy Boulevard: Oct. 30-Nov. 2

Crews will close northbound South Academy Boulevard between Hancock Expressway and Drennan Road. Access to Jet Wing Drive from South Academy Boulevard will also be closed.

  • Detour: From South Academy Boulevard, turn west on Drennan Road, north on Astrozon Boulevard and east on Hancock Expressway.
  • Jet Wing Drive access: Drivers can reach Jet Wing Drive from Hancock Expressway.

Jet Wing Drive: Nov. 5-20

Starting at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, Colorado Springs Utilities will close part of Jet Wing Drive just east of South Academy Boulevard through Nov. 20.

During the closure, crews with the South Academy Boulevard Improvements Project will also install new drainage pipes, pave the road and rebuild sidewalks. Doing both projects' work during the same closure will help reduce the need for separate closures.

Nearby driveways will remain open. Residents, employees and customers can reach Jet Wing Drive from Hancock Expressway. The project team has worked with Colorado Springs Fire Department Station 11 to maintain emergency access.

Detours:

  • North detour: From South Academy Boulevard, turn east on Hancock Expressway, then south on Jet Wing Drive.
  • South detour: Take Boychuk Avenue north to Hancock Expressway, then go east to Jet Wing Drive.

Jet Wing Drive left-turn restriction: Through Nov. 20

Drivers cannot turn left from southbound Jet Wing Drive onto South Academy Boulevard through Nov. 20.

What to expect during construction

  • Lane closures at times from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday
  • Temporary changes to walking routes
  • Relocated bus stops; visit MMTransit.com for details
  • Construction near driveways
  • Left turns allowed where possible, except where posted
  • Access to nearby businesses maintained during construction
  • Roadside message boards with traffic updates

Drivers should slow down, follow posted signs, watch for workers and equipment, and allow extra travel time. Use other routes when possible. All work depends on weather, and schedules may change.

This voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority project will improve safety, traffic flow, walking routes and drainage along South Academy Boulevard. It is the first major reconstruction of the road since it opened in 1969.
