The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection yesterday signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Habitat for Humanity Fiji for the construction of a Child Wellbeing Centre to provide critical support services for children who are street dwellers across Fiji's four Divisions.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening child protection systems and improving the wellbeing of vulnerable children, in line with the Ministry's mandate under the Child Care and Protection Act 2024 and the Child Justice Act 2024.
The proposed centre will provide a safe, supportive and rehabilitative environment for children in need of care and protection, serving as a key platform for coordinated interventions including access to social services, psychosocial support, referral pathways and reintegration programmes.
Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, said the collaboration marks an important milestone in strengthening Fiji's child protection framework.
"The Ministry will continue to work with key stakeholders, development partners and civil society organisations to ensure that every child in Fiji grows up safe, protected and supported," Minister Kiran said.
She added that the initiative aligns with national priorities to protect children from neglect, exploitation and abuse, while addressing the root causes of children living and working on the streets.
Interim National Director of Habitat for Humanity Fiji, Ms Sangita Kumar, said the organisation was honoured to partner with Government to advance the wellbeing of vulnerable children.
The collaboration brings together government leadership and community-based expertise to deliver sustainable infrastructure that supports child development, safety and dignity, while strengthening community resilience and promoting inclusive social development across Fiji.
Construction of the Child Wellbeing Centre will commence following the completion of technical and implementation arrangements, with the facility designed to meet the specific needs of children requiring care and protection services.
