120+ Encampments Addressed Citywide
LOS ANGELES - Mayor Karen Bass today announced that Inside Safe brought more than 40 Angelenos inside from a longstanding encampment along Laurel Canyon Boulevard under the 170 Freeway in North Hollywood. Freeway underpasses are especially dangerous - this operation brought Angelenos inside with life-saving services while also addressing public safety concerns for nearby businesses. "Inside Safe is saving lives and restoring communities across Los Angeles," said Mayor Bass. "Our team engages with unhoused Angelenos not just by providing critical resources, but by building relationships. This urgent work will always be led with compassion, dignity, and respect for both the individuals we bring inside and the neighborhoods we serve."
"I want to thank Mayor Bass for the help she has given us today in securing housing for over 40 unhoused persons in District 2," said Councilmember Adrin Nazarian. "The appearance of a large encampment under the 170 Freeway on Laurel Canyon Boulevard threatened a return to the worst days of the COVID-19 pandemic when we saw encampments like this explode. Now all of the people camping under the freeway on Laurel are inside and safe. My office is working closely with LAPD and service providers to ensure that this public right of way does not become obstructed again and that this area remains safe and clean for the use of the entire community."
Local residents and representatives from nearby schools raised public safety and accessibility concerns due to this longstanding encampment. In the weeks leading up to the operation, the Inside Safe Field Intervention Team engaged regularly with individuals living at the encampment, offering services and building trust to prepare residents for a voluntary transition into interim housing.
Inside Safe has now addressed more than 120 encampmentsacross all 15 Council Districts. Building on Los Angeles' first two-year decline in street homelessness, Mayor Bass remains committed to fixing the broken bureaucracy that contributes to homelessness, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring every Angeleno has access to the housing and services they need.
