Warning. Online circulation of false and fraudulent content unlawfully using the name and image of Fabio Panetta, Governor of Banca d'Italia

Banca d'Italia is reporting the online circulation of false images, videos and articles that unlawfully use the name and image of the Governor, Fabio Panetta. These materials portray him - in a completely fabricated manner - as taking part in well-known television programmes or other media contexts, sometimes in association with the promotion of investment platforms and likely aimed at committing fraud.

Such content is also created using an artificial intelligence technique, known as a deepfake.

None of this content corresponds to reality.

Banca d'Italia has already filed a complaint with the judicial authorities in order to protect the public from potential scams and to safeguard both its interests and the Governor's image.

Should you encounter such materials, we advise you to:

  • treat the published message with suspicion;
  • refrain from responding to any requests that may be made;
  • avoid sharing the content.
