That idea became the inspiration behind Personal Record, the collaborative brew between IRONMAN and Athletic Brewing Company.
While the finished product may sit in a can, its story began long before the first batch was brewed.
Finding a Common Purpose
Successful collaborations are built on more than logos and packaging. They start with shared values.
For years, Athletic Brewing and IRONMAN have celebrated athletes who pursue ambitious goals, challenge conventional limits, and embrace the rewards of hard work. As the Official Non-Alcoholic Beer of the IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 Global Series, Athletic Brewing has become a familiar presence throughout race weekend-from the energy of the IRONMAN Village to the celebration that follows the finish line.
As conversations between the two organizations evolved, the goal became clear: create something that felt authentically connected to the race community.
Not just a sponsorship activation.
Not just a race giveaway.
A non-alcoholic beer with a story.
Inspired by the Athlete Experience
The development of Personal Record began with a simple question:
What does achievement taste like?
For the team behind the collaboration, the answer wasn't found in podium finishes or championship titles alone. It was found in the experiences shared by thousands of athletes across the IRONMAN community.
The first-time participant completing a lifelong goal.
The veteran competitor returning after an injury.
The athlete balancing training, work, and family while pursuing something extraordinary.
Every race weekend introduces countless versions of success, each deeply personal and unique.
That mindset provided the creative foundation for the project. Personal Record was designed to celebrate progress in all its forms.
From Brainstorm to Brew
Like race preparation itself, creating a limited-edition collaboration brew required months of planning and refinement.
Marketing teams, partnership professionals, brand leaders, and brewing experts worked together to align everything from storytelling and design to product positioning and athlete relevance.
The challenge was finding a concept that would resonate equally with seasoned triathletes, first-time participants, spectators, and the broader Athletic Brewing community.
The name came naturally.
A personal record represents something universal within sports. It is measurable yet deeply personal. It celebrates achievement without comparison. Most importantly, it reminds athletes that the journey is ultimately about becoming a better version of themselves.
Once the concept was established, every element of the project centered around that idea.
Designing a Non-Alcoholic Beer Worthy of the Name
The visual identity needed to capture the emotion of race day.
The anticipation felt at the start line.
The determination required during the toughest miles.
The satisfaction experienced at the finish.
Design teams explored how to blend the unmistakable IRONMAN brand with Athletic Brewing's recognizable style, creating packaging that reflected both organizations while remaining true to the athlete audience.
The result was a product intended to feel familiar to race athletes while standing out as a unique collaboration within the growing world of non-alcoholic beverages.
A Celebration Beyond the Finish Line
For many athletes, crossing the finish line isn't the end of the experience-it's the beginning of the celebration.
That moment, often shared with friends, family members, training partners, and fellow competitors, represents months of discipline and commitment finally coming together.
Personal Record was created to be part of that moment.
Not because every athlete will achieve a personal best on race day, but because every athlete arrives with a personal story worth celebrating.
In that way, the NA beer reflects the same spirit that defines the IRONMAN community itself: staying the course in pursuit of meaningful goals.
More Than a Collaboration
At its core, Personal Record is about recognizing the achievements that don't always appear in official results.
The early morning workouts.
The setbacks overcome.
The long training days no one else sees.
The decision to keep going when quitting would have been easier.
Those moments are often the real personal records.
Through the collaboration, IRONMAN and Athletic Brewing sought to capture that sentiment in a way that extends beyond race day-giving athletes a new way to celebrate the progress, dedication, and determination that define their journey.
Because while every athlete's finish time is different, the sense of accomplishment that follows is universal.
And that's something worth raising a can to. ♂️
