Washington, DC - Ballots are still being counted, but early returns show Sierra Club-endorsed candidates have won critical races across multiple states, including high profile Gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, the New York City Mayoral race, Georgia's Public Service Commission races, and more.
Rising utility costs and affordability became a major focal point in races across the country in recent months, and results so far show voters turning out in droves to elect candidates who support lower-cost clean energy and have proven records of working to protect clean air and water.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Loren Blackford released the following statement:
"Safeguarding our health, protecting our communities, and keeping energy affordable remain winning issues at the ballot box. The American people have spoken clearly, rejecting Donald Trump's fossil fuel agenda that is driving up energy costs while threatening our health and safety. Election Day is a celebration of our democracy and the power that each of us hold to improve our communities and our country. We were proud to endorse leaders in races up and down the ballot who understand that clean energy is critical to lowering costs and powering our future. We congratulate all of our Sierra Club endorsed candidates for their hard-fought races and look forward to continuing to work with them across all levels of government to put people over polluters and protect our health and safety, now and for generations to come"
