Fixing a Broken System For Our Veterans

June 10, 2025

Some of the most important care a veteran can receive doesn't come from a hospital-it comes from family. Every day, spouses, parents, and loved ones across the country are stepping up to care for veterans who've come home with serious injuries. Many of them leave their jobs and put their lives on hold to provide the full-time care that veterans need.

These caregivers deserve support for such a selfless undertaking-not a maze of bureaucracy and red tape.

Right now, the VA's Caregiver Program is stuck operating in an outdated system with inconsistent access. Pertinent medical documents and health records get lost, and applications slip through the cracks. It's no wonder that decisions can take months or even years to reach, especially if there's an appeal.

I've heard from too many families who've been denied help for no good reason or had to wait so long that their loved one passed away before getting a decision.

That's why I introduced the Veterans' Caregiver Appeals Modernization Act. My bill does three simple yet important things:

  • It requires the VA to finally create one unified digital system so everyone reviewing applications or appeals sees the same information;
  • It speeds up the decision-making process so families aren't left waiting; and
  • It makes sure caregivers can still receive the financial support they've earned and are owed, even if their veteran passes away before an appeal is resolved.

Taking care of someone you love is hard enough. Families shouldn't have to fight a broken system just to get the help they deserve.
This bill is about fixing a broken system and doing right by the people who are doing right by our veterans.
