WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), a member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, released the following statement after President Donald Trump sent a letter to Congress asserting that the 'hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated':
"The Administration claims it's in a ceasefire with Iran even though the U.S. military is actively blockading Iranian ports and commerce in the Strait of Hormuz. And while this 'ceasefire' supposedly started on April 7, the U.S. Navy fired on and seized an Iranian-flagged vessel on April 19. If any other country did all of this to the U.S., we would consider it an act of war. The Trump-Vance Administration isn't fooling anyone, and the American people are smart enough to see through the lies and chaos. This is further proof that the Administration will make every excuse they can to avoid explaining to the American people why they started a war of choice against Iran when there was no imminent nuclear threat. This war has already cost billions of dollars, raised gas prices, and killed and injured servicemembers, and Americans deserve real answers. I will keep pushing the Administration to come to Congress and do everything I can to end this war."
