MARIETTA, GA - The Marietta History Center (MHC) is honored to celebrate Veterans Day with a special lecture and book signing event featuring acclaimed author Clint Smith. The event will take place on Monday, November 11th, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the Marietta History Center. In recognition of their service, veterans will receive free admission to this special event.

Clint Smith, a distinguished veteran of the Georgia Air National Guard, will discuss his latest book, The Georgia Air National Guard. With a notable career that includes serving as a command historian at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this event. As a former board member of the Historical Society of the Georgia National Guard and an eight-year member of the Georgia Legislature, Smith has been a key figure in military and security issues. His extensive background includes publishing columns on public policy and history, in addition to authoring two novels.

Smith's presentation will draw on images from the Georgia National Guard history office and the Historical Society of the Georgia National Guard, chronicling the history of the Guard from its inception in 1947. He will highlight significant milestones, including the creation of the first distinct aviation unit at Candler Field in Atlanta in 1941 and the official establishment of the Air National Guard in September 1947. The narrative will also touch upon the legacy of Gen. James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia and the first Georgia Guardsman, who epitomized the tradition of the minuteman.

The Marietta History Center recommends purchasing your tickets in advance through our website. Refunds will only be issued if the MHC cancels the event.
