OU establishes Glenn McIntosh 'Passion, Purpose and Perseverance' Leadership Award to honor transformational, student-centered leadership

Oakland University has established the Glenn McIntosh "Passion, Purpose and Perseverance" Leadership Award to recognize OU employees who demonstrate exceptional leadership in advancing student success, strengthening the campus community, and embodying the compassionate, principled leadership exemplified by the late Glenn McIntosh, senior vice president for Student Affairs and Chief Diversity Officer.

McIntosh served Oakland University for more than 30 years as a visionary leader known for his integrity, empathy, and unwavering commitment to students. His leadership was transformational and marked not by titles or authority, but by his ability to inspire, empower, and lift others to their highest potential. He was a "glue leader," someone who built unity, fostered collaboration and guided the community forward through his example, wisdom and love for students.

This award honors a faculty or staff member whose leadership reflects those same qualities and continues the legacy of McIntosh's extraordinary impact. Nominees should demonstrate excellence in all or most of the following leadership characteristics:

Student-Centered Leadership

• Prioritizes student success in decision-making and daily practice.
• Demonstrates deep care for students' academic progress, well-being and sense of belonging.
• Inspires students through mentorship, advocacy and personal engagement.

Transformational Leadership Style

• Creates positive change through vision, motivation, and empowerment.
• Encourages colleagues and students to grow, innovate and reach their highest potential.
• Builds a culture of trust, hope and shared purpose.

Compassionate Leadership

• Advances initiatives that create a more welcoming and equitable campus environment.
• Promotes respect, understanding and belonging for all members of the OU community.
• Demonstrates cultural competence and inclusive leadership in team and student engagement.

Community-Building and Collaborative Leadership

• Strengthens relationships across divisions, units and student organizations.
• Models effective, compassionate communication and resolves conflict with integrity.
• Embodies "glue leadership," bringing people together, elevating morale and fostering unity.

Inspirational Influence and Servant Leadership

• Leads with humility, empathy, kindness, and a commitment to service.
• Encourages others through uplifting communication and emotional intelligence.
• Demonstrates the "three Ps" Glenn often emphasized (purpose, passion, and perseverance) in their work.

Eligibility

• All full-time or part-time Oakland University faculty and staff members are eligible.
• Individuals may be nominated by students, colleagues, supervisors or administrators.
