Readout of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine’s Video Teleconference with Japan’s Chief of Staff Joint Staff General Uchikura Hirokai

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Joint Staff Spokesperson Mr. Joseph Holstead provided the following readout:
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine, spoke with Japan Chief of Staff, Joint Staff Gen. Uchikura Hirokai, on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025.
This was the first call between Gen. Caine and Gen. Uchikura, who assumed the position of Japan Chief of Staff, Joint Staff on August 1st, 2025. During the meeting, Gen. Caine and Gen. Uchikura discussed the importance of continuing to bolster the already strong strategic partnerships between the United States, Japan, and regional partners. The two leaders also discussed pursuing U.S.-Japan defense initiatives.
The U.S.-Japan Alliance remains the cornerstone of our regional security strategy to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific.
