Just a day after the Texan men earned a top 25 national ranking for the first time in program history and became the first WAC program since 2022 to crack the top 25, more awards were handed out to the Texans. The Purple and White have now earned 15 total WAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, with seven during the outdoor season. The Texans have earned at least one athlete of the week after each of their first four outdoor meets.
This past weekend, Sathyanathan became the new nation's leader in the long jump and it was followed up on Wednesday with the announcement of his first weekly award as a Texan, the WAC Men's Fied Athlete of the Week. With his best jump of 8.14 meters coming on his fifth attempt, he won the event at the Michael Johnson Invitational. With his jump coming above a wind of 2.0 meters per second, Sathyanathan is credited with the All-Conditions School record and the new All-Conditions Clyde Hart Stadium record. Sathyanathan is now at the top of the leader board in the NCAA in the long jump. His 8.14-meter mark also leads the NCAA West Region and the WAC.
The transfer student was one of four Texans to compete in the program's first trip to the NCAA Indoor National Championships. He was named Second Team All-American with his performance. He not only owns the outdoor long jump school record, but the indoor program record as well (7.92 meters). Sathyanathan will look to maintain his top West regional ranking and post a top 12 finish at the regional championships at the end of may for a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. from June 11-14.
Wessely earns her first weekly honor being named the women's field athlete of the week, after turning in the WAC's best hammer throw of the season at the Michael Johnson Invitational. She posted the three best tosses in school history while breaking the school record on her third and fifth throws. Her fifth and best throw of 53.21 meters is the new WAC-leading mark and placed her fifth at the Michael Johnson Invitational.
She is in her first season with the Texans after spending her first two collegiate seasons at Chadron State. Wessely was the WAC Champion in the weight throw at the WAC Indoor Championships and also holds the school record in the event. Wessely also post a Second Team All-WAC finish in the shot put at the conference indoor championships.
Don't miss your chance to see the No. 25 Tarleton State Texans back in action this weekend for their first and only home event of the season. Admission will be free to all fans to come out and support the Purple and White during their historic season.
