WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44), alongside Representatives Chuy García (IL-04), and Steven Horsford (NV-04), reintroduced a resolution to recognize September 22as National Hispanic Nurses Day and honor the contributions of Hispanic nurses to the health and well-being of communities across the country.

Hispanic nurses play an important role in providing culturally responsive care and serving communities that have historically faced barriers to quality health care. Their leadership and dedication are especially critical in underserved and under-resourced communities, where nurses often serve as the most trusted health care providers and advocates.

"Across our country, Hispanic nurses care for patients, support families, and help build healthier communities every day," said Rep. Barragán. "National Hispanic Nurses Day is an opportunity to recognize their dedication and celebrate the invaluable contributions they make to our health care system. As someone who represents a majority Latino population and whose own sister was a nurse, I get to see firsthand how Hispanic nurses bring their expertise, lived experiences, and commitment to the bedside every day, helping ensure more patients can access compassionate and culturally responsive care."

"Oftentimes, Hispanic nurses are the first and only advocates for our community in health care settings, providing care in the preferred language of their patients. They are crucial to members of any care team and deserve to be recognized for the work they do. That's why I'm proud to join Congresswoman Barragán in introducing this resolution to recognize September 22 as National Hispanic Nurses Day," said Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García.

"Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor the generations whose courage, culture, and contributions have shaped our nation, and to recognize our responsibility to carry that legacy forward," said NAHN President, Grace Grau, DNP, RN, ACNP-BC, AACC, FAAN. "As Hispanic nurses, we stand on the shoulders of those who opened doors before us, and we have a responsibility to hold those doors open for those who follow. Our heritage is our strength, our voices matter, and together, we are building a healthier and more equitable future for generations to come. ¡Somos NAHN! Somos la fuerza de nuestra comunidad."

National Hispanic Nurses Day falls during National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated annually from September 15 through October 15. The designation would recognize the strength, service, and leadership of Hispanic nurses while highlighting their ongoing contributions to improving health outcomes and addressing health disparities.

The resolution also recognizes the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) as the leading organization that represents and advocates for Hispanic nurses. Since its founding in 1975, NAHN has supported Hispanic nurses through advocacy, education, professional development, and leadership opportunities, with chapters across 24 states and growing.

In addition to García and Horsford, the original cosponsors of this resolution are Reps. Salud Carbajal (CA-24), André Carson (IN-07), Yvette Clarke (NY-9), Lou Correa (CA- 46), Jim Costa (CA-21), Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34), Adelita Grijalva (AZ-7), Doris Matsui (CA-07), Rob Menendez (NJ-08), Andrea Salinas (OR-06), Mark Takano (CA-39), Norma Torres (CA-35), Lori Trahan (MA-03), and Nydia Velázquez (NY-07).
