Fall Rains Give Cover Crops a Boost

One silver lining about near-record rainfall throughout Iowa during September is that it resulted in ample moisture for cover crop growth.

As harvest hit full stride last week, I saw several fields where a green carpet of cover crops was emerging where corn and soybean plants stood just a few days earlier. It isn't like the weather didn't present some challenges - even flying on cover crops into standing corn and soybeans proved to be difficult last month with few days in between persistent rain showers.

But last week's drier weather and sunshine helped jumpstart growth of cover crops that will protect the soil, sequester nutrients and break up compaction.

Even with tight economic margins, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship reports farmers are showing record demand for cost-share funding to help them seed cover crops this fall. For the first time, statewide cover crop cost-share enrollment exceeded 1 million acres, a 40% increase from the 700,000 acres of cover crops enrolled in state cost-share programs last year.

The total number of cover crop acres nearly quadruples when you add in investments from farmers, along with cost share from federal and private sources. Overall, Iowa farmers planted nearly 3.9 million acres of cover crops in 2024, a 92% increase over the past six years, according to the Iowa Nutrient Research and Education Council.

The lush green fields emerging behind this year's combines are more than a sign of successful establishment. They represent a long-term commitment by farmers to improving soil health and water quality while building resilience against variable weather.
