BIRMINGHAM, Ala., May 20, 2026 - United States Steel Corporation ("U. S. Steel") today released the findings of its first economic impact study of its operations in Alabama, showing the company generated $536.2 million in total economic impact in Fiscal Year 2024, supported 1,963 jobs statewide, and contributed $12.4 million in state and local tax revenue. The analysis, conducted by Parker Strategy Group, highlights the company's role in strengthening Alabama's manufacturing economy, supporting local supply chains, and investing in communities across the state. The Alabama report is part of a broader series examining U. S. Steel's economic impact in key states across the country.

For more than a century, Birmingham has been a cornerstone of American steelmaking and industrial strength. Often called the "Pittsburgh of the South," the region shares a deep steelmaking heritage with Pennsylvania. U. S. Steel's operations in Alabama continue that tradition today, supporting local jobs, strengthening supply chains, and producing steel that powers infrastructure, manufacturing, and energy systems across the United States.

"Steel has long been a cornerstone of Alabama's economy, and it continues to play a critical role in our state's growth and competitiveness," said Will Ainsworth, Alabama Lieutenant Governor. "Companies such as U. S. Steel create good-paying jobs that support families and strengthen communities across our state. U. S. Steel's continued investment strengthens Alabama's position as a national leader in manufacturing and helps drive economic opportunity throughout our supply chain. Alabama values its relationship with companies like U. S. Steel and continues working every day to be the most pro-business state in America."

"As much as U. S. Steel means to us here in Birmingham, it is a common connector between communities all across this country. It was the same kind of jobs for the same kind of folks in different communities and different states-but it meant the same thing for all of them: owning a home, putting kids through college," said Representative Kelvin Datcher, Alabama House of Representatives. "U. S. Steel didn't just do that in Birmingham. They did that all across this country."

"For more than a century, U. S. Steel has been honored to be part of Alabama," said David B. Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer of U. S. Steel. "Alabama represents the best of what American manufacturing can be: strong communities, skilled people, and a deep industrial heritage. Now, with significant investments in advanced steelmaking, Alabama is becoming an even more important part of our strategy to grow stronger, compete harder, and win for decades to come. This report tells that story through the people who make it possible every day. Their grit, pride, and commitment help power Alabama's economy, strengthen the communities they call home, and produce the steel our customers and our country depend on."

Alabama Impact by the Numbers (FY2024):

  • $536.2 million total economic impact
  • $262.2 million value added to Alabama's economy
  • 1,963 jobs supported and sustained statewide, including 958 direct employees
  • $12.4 million in state and local tax revenue generated
  • 328 Alabama-based suppliers engaged, strengthening local manufacturing and business networks
  • $517,500 in community impact, including corporate giving, employee donations, and 13,365 volunteer hours

Beyond its economic contributions, U. S. Steel continues to invest in communities across Alabama. In 2024, the company supported organizations such as Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) of Jefferson County and the Children's of Alabama Foundation, and sponsored community initiatives including the Birmingham Museum of Art Ball, helping strengthen nonprofit services and cultural institutions throughout the Birmingham and Jefferson County region.

Looking ahead, U. S. Steel is positioned for continued growth through its partnership with Nippon Steel. This strategic alliance will create one of the world's leading steelmakers, strengthen American manufacturing, and accelerate investment in advanced and sustainable steel production that benefits Alabama and communities across the country. To that end, in November 2025, U. S. Steel announced a major capital investment of $75 million to install a new Premium Thread Line at its Fairfield Tubular Operations in Alabama as part of a larger capital deployment strategy in partnership with Nippon Steel.

The Economic Impact in Alabama study highlights the ongoing role U. S. Steel plays in Alabama's economy. Generations of workers have built careers through Fairfield Works and related operations, helping shape the region's industrial legacy while supporting economic opportunity today.

"This first economic impact study highlights how deeply U. S. Steel contributes to Alabama's economy and communities," said Nichole Parker, Managing Principal of Parker Strategy Group. "From supporting nearly 2,000 jobs to partnering with more than 300 Alabama suppliers and generating millions in tax revenue, the company's impact helps strengthen economic opportunity across the state."
