City of Hoboken & Hoboken Green Team announce Earth Day citywide gate sale

The City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Green Team invite residents and visitors to celebrate Earth Day with a community-wide gate sale on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This citywide event encourages residents to sell gently used, secondhand items directly from their gates or stoops, promoting reuse, reducing landfill waste, and advancing sustainability. Shoppers will be able to explore participating locations using an online city map, making it easy to discover unique items throughout Hoboken.

Reducing waste is a component of the City's Climate Action Plan which aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero energy by 2030, as materials sent to landfills decompose and release greenhouse gases such as methane. In Hoboken, solid waste accounts for approximately five percent of the community's greenhouse gas emissions, which total roughly 161,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. By extending the life of gently used household items and clothing through reuse, residents can help cut down on emissions associated with waste disposal as well as the production and transportation of new goods.

The Earth Day Gate Sale also supports the Climate Action Plan components of sustainable consumption, and community engagement as key strategies for lowering Hoboken's overall greenhouse gas emissions and building a more resilient and environmentally responsible community.

Residents who do not have access to a stoop or gate are encouraged to participate by reserving space at Church Square Park, located on Garden Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets.

"Earth Day is a reminder that small, local actions can have a big impact," said Mayor Emily B. Jabbour. "By reusing items and reducing what we send to landfills, we are cutting greenhouse gas emissions and moving closer to our climate goals. The Earth Day Gate Sale is a fun and meaningful way for our community to come together and take action for a more sustainable Hoboken. Thank you to the Hoboken Green Team for organizing a wonderful community event."

The event will take place on Saturday, April 18, with sale hours running from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Participants must register online at arcg.is/1ii0W43 by April 3.

Residents who wish to host a sale at their personal stoop or in Church Square Park may do so with a suggested donation of $25, which includes inclusion in City advertising and placement on the event map. All donation checks should be made payable to the City of Hoboken.
