Phone Call Between President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and European Council President António Costa
  • Mexico and the European Union will hold their 8th Summit on May 22, 2026, to launch a new chapter in their strategic partnership.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and European Council President António Costa spoke by phone, agreeing to hold the 8th European Union-Mexico Summit on May 22, 2026, in Mexico City.

The European Union will be represented by European Council President Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who will begin a visit to Mexico on May 21.

The two leaders agreed that the Summit would mark a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship and open a new chapter in the strategic partnership between Mexico and the European Union.

Among the Summit's key anticipated outcomes is the signing of the Mexico-EU Political, Economic and Cooperation Strategic Partnership Agreement (Modernized Global Agreement) and the Interim Trade Agreement, once the European Union has completed its required internal procedures. The Modernized Global Agreement will update and deepen the current framework governing the political, cooperation, and economic relationship, established twenty-five years ago when the Mexico-European Union Global Agreement entered into force in 2000.

The comprehensive agreement will strengthen the relationship in all its dimensions and lay the groundwork for deeper collaboration in sectors strategic to the sustainable development of both parties.

The Summit will also drive progress on shared priorities in environment, investment, energy, security, health, migration, digitalization, and innovation.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, respect for international law, and international cooperation as core principles for addressing today's global challenges.
