Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie recently sat down with WCIA's Alex Whitney to talk about the latest push for fair legislative maps in Illinois.
The recently launched Fair Map Illinois initiative, which aims to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot next year to establish an independent commission to draw state legislative maps, is something Leader McCombie and Illinois House Republicans support.
McCombie has been vocal about her support for a fair, independent map-but most importantly an end to extreme political gerrymandering that has silenced voters. When the Fair Map Illinois iniative was first launched, McCombie released the following statement:
"For decades, Illinois voters have been silenced by heavily gerrymandered maps that let politicians choose their voters instead of the other way around. Although past attempts to reform the system were blocked by the Democratic majority, a new initiative launched this week marks a promising step forward.
"We need an independent redistricting process-one that amplifies voters' voices and strengthens our democracy.
"Since the Governor failed to keep his promise to the people of Illinois, the Fair Map Illinois Initiative now stands as our best path toward meaningful change."
