On Sunday, Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone conversation with Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs to discuss security challenges in the Middle East, Russia's war against Ukraine and international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace, as well as the situation in Belarus.
The Presidents of Lithuania and Latvia strongly condemned Iran's attacks in the region and expressed solidarity with the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and other states whose territories were targeted. The Lithuanian leader stressed that Iran's actions constitute a grave violation of state sovereignty and pose a threat to regional stability.
During the conversation, Gitanas Nausėda noted that the security situation in the Middle East is being closely monitored, and expressed regret that negotiations on Iran's nuclear and missile programs have not produced results. He emphasized that Iran cannot possess or develop a nuclear weapon. The leaders of Lithuania and Latvia underlined that Iran's actions threaten not only the security of the Middle East countries, but also broader international stability, including through Iran's support for Russia's war against Ukraine.
Addressing Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, the Presidents emphasized that as negotiations between Ukraine and the United States are continuing, there are no tangible outcomes yet, and stressed the importance of maintaining consistent political, financial, and military support for Ukraine.
The situation in Belarus was also addressed during the telephone conversation. The Lithuanian and Latvian leaders noted that the Belarusian regime, like Iran, acts as an enabler of Russia's aggression and remains a significant destabilizer within the region's security architecture, acting alongside other regimes that support the aggression.
The Presidents of both countries called on the international community to make every effort to prevent uncontrolled escalation in the Middle East and to avert a large-scale conflict. They emphasized that regional stability is essential for global security, and that diplomatic efforts and close coordination with European Union partners and allies remain crucial.
