The City of Rochester Parks and Recreation Department will begin its annual non-lethal goose management program at Silver Lake Park, Cascade Lake Park, Soldiers Field Park, and Kutzky Park as part of ongoing efforts to reduce conflicts between park users and the local Canada goose population.
First implemented in 2021, the program focuses on humane, non-lethal strategies to manage resident geese and protect the quality and usability of Rochester's most popular park spaces. The initiative is designed to balance community enjoyment of parks with responsible wildlife stewardship.
Seasonal management activities will take place during the nesting period, typically from mid-April through late May. Work will be conducted by a contracted wildlife management service using methods recommended by Humane World for Animals.
"These efforts are about long-term balance," said Paul Widman, Director of Parks and Recreation. "The resident goose population has grown beyond what our parks can support. A consistent, non-lethal approach helps reduce impacts and create a more inviting park experience."
The City's approach includes techniques such as egg addling, a humane method that prevents eggs from hatching and helps gradually reduce population growth. This method is widely recognized as safe, effective, and non-lethal.
Residents may notice staff or contractors working in designated park areas during this time. All activities are conducted under appropriate state and federal permits and are carefully timed to ensure effectiveness while minimizing disruption.
The City of Rochester remains committed to humane, non-lethal wildlife management and will continue to monitor park conditions while exploring additional deterrent and habitat strategies to support long-term success.
